Dr. Karl Koenig and the Care Team Approach
The director of the Musculoskeletal Institute discusses his team’s approach to whole-person orthopedic care at UT Health Austin
“Hi, my name is Karl Koenig, I’m an orthopedic surgeon at UT Health Austin. I’m an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and the director of the Musculoskeletal Institute.
Having practiced orthopedic surgery for many years, I have always been frustrated by the subset of patients that I’m not able to help and just because you don’t need surgery doesn’t mean there aren’t things that we can do to help you and so I’ve always tried to bring a team together around me.
And so to me it’s been one of the greatest things in the world to have all of these folks come together. So, when my patient does decide that they want to lose weight and start doing some more exercises, I’ve got experts right there in front of them that can help and actually carry them through that plan, because we all know that it’s harder than it sounds.
So, in my mind it’s allowing you to have those important opinions, including the patient’s, all available so that your treatment plan is actually of high value.
That it (your visit) was worth your time to come in today; you didn’t just come in to get a referral to somewhere else. So, we really try to provide the complete package and take care of you as a person.”
