3D Mammography

Health Transformation Building, 9th Floor 1601 Trinity Street, Bldg. A, Austin, TX 78712

About This Service

UT Health Austin's Imaging Center offers the latest 3D mammography technology for screening mammograms. 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, creates a 3D image of the breast using X-rays. This means your radiologist receives a clearer image so that they can detect suspicious masses or cancer earlier. Having a more accurate mammogram also means patients receive less callbacks and experience less anxiety about undergoing a second screening. Additionally, tomosynthesis offers better imaging for women with dense breasts because the X-rays are taken from multiple angles around the breast.

How Do I Schedule My Screening Mammogram?

Call UT Health Austin's Access Center at 1-512-495-5300, press option 4 and then option 3.

There are two ways you may schedule your screening mammogram at UT Health Austin:

  1. Your primary care provider can submit an order for a screening mammogram to UT Health Austin by fax at 1-512-495-5680.
  2. If you wish to self-refer, bring the name and contact information of your primary care physician who will receive and review your results to your visit.

Hours of Operation

  • Monday: 10:00 am to 12 noon and 1 to 4 pm
  • Tuesday - Friday: 8:30 am to 12 noon and 1-4 pm
  • Walk-ins are accommodated during office hours if the schedule permits.

What to Expect at Your Screening

Checking In: When you arrive at the Health Transformation Building, take the elevators to the 9th floor. Check in with our friendly concierge staff and they will escort you to the Imaging Center's check-in. Once you're checked in with the Imaging Center, we'll walk you to mammography and complete your screening.

Insurance and Billing: We accept most major insurance plans, but can also accommodate self-pay patients as well. Please note: Imaging studies performed at UT Health Austin are interpreted by the radiologists of Austin Radiological Association (ARA). Because they are a separate entity, you will receive a separate bill from ARA for the reading or interpretation of your screening mammogram.

What to Wear: Wear comfortable clothing that can be easily removed. We recommend a two-piece outfit, since you will only need to remove your top. Your mammography technician will give you a gown to wear while you are in the room.

Please do not wear deodorant, perfume, or apply lotions or creams to your chest area.

When Should I Receive My Results?

You should receive a letter within 3-5 working days. Please note, your imaging results may appear in your patient portal before your provider has had a chance to review them and make recommendations. In general, your provider will notify you through your portal once they have reviewed your results.

If follow-up images are needed, Austin Radiological Association will call to schedule within 72 hours of your screening.

If you have any questions, please call UT Health Austin's Access Center at 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737).
