Declan Fleming, MD, FACS

Clinical Biography

Declan Fleming, MD, FACS, is a board-certified surgical oncologist in UT Health Austin’s Surgical Oncology Clinic. He is also a part of UT Health Austin’s CaLM Care Team. He specializes in the surgical treatment of patients with cancer and has expertise in the treatment of cancers of the pancreas, liver, and stomach as well as neuroendocrine tumors. Additionally, Dr. Fleming is an assistant professor and serves as the Division Chief of Surgical Oncology for the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care. He also serves as the Associate Director for Surgical Services in the Dell Medical School Livestrong Cancer Institutes.

Dr. Fleming earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed a residency in general surgery at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, a fellowship in burns, trauma, and critical care at the Shriners Burns Institute, and a second fellowship in general surgical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was honored with the Marvin M. Romsdahl Clinical Excellence Award and the American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship Award.

Dr. Fleming currently collaborates with Dr. H. J. Kim in The University of Texas at Austin Department of Biomedical Engineering, working on cutting-edge “Human Organs-on-Chips” to study colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. He also leads research in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) by teaming with members of The University of Texas at Austin Departments of Kinesiology and Physical Education and Nutrition to create a “prehabilitation” program to speed the recovery of patients undergoing surgery for cancer.
