Biography and Education
Clinical Biography
Declan Fleming, MD, FACS, is a board-certified hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgical oncologist in UT Health Austin’s Surgical Oncology Clinic. He is also a part of UT Health Austin’s CaLM Care Team. He specializes in the treatment of pancreatic, liver, and stomach cancers, as well as neuroendocrine tumors. Additionally, Dr. Fleming is an assistant professor and serves as the Director of Outreach and Integration for the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Fleming earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed a residency in general surgery at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed a fellowship in burns, trauma, and critical care at the Shriners Hospitals for Children and a fellowship in general surgical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was honored with the Marvin M. Romsdahl Clinical Excellence Award and the American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship Award.
Dr. Fleming currently collaborates with Dr. H. J. Kim in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, developing “Human Organs-on-Chips” to study colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. He also leads research in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) in collaboration with the Departments of Kinesiology and Health Education and Nutritional Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, where he is helping create a “prehabilitation” program to speed the recovery of patients undergoing cancer surgery. He is an active member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
