Clinical Biography

Declan Fleming, MD is a cancer surgeon in Surgical Oncology at UT Health Austin. He attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed a residency in general surgery at UTMB and a postdoctoral research fellowship in burns, trauma and critical care at the Shriners Burns Institute in Galveston. After the completion of training in general surgery, Fleming undertook a three-year fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. While completing this clinical and research fellowship, Fleming served as a junior faculty associate at the cancer center, earning the Marvin M. Romsdahl Clinical Excellence Award and an American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship Award. Dr. Fleming is also a affiliate faculty for the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care in the Dell Medical School.

He has initiated and conducted clinical trials in the care of patients with melanoma and cancer of the colon, breast, pancreas and liver, and he has taught medical students and residents. In Austin he established a practice on the surgical care of patients with cancer. He serves as the cancer liaison physician to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for the Seton Healthcare Family and St. David’s Medical Center.

He has been a member of the Colorectal Cancer Steering Committee for the American Cancer Society, Texas Division, and serves on the Board of Medical Directors for Hospice Austin. Fleming is a member of numerous medical specialty societies including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Christian Medical & Dental Associations.
