Biography and Education

Clinical Biography

D. Jeffrey Newport, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist in UT Health Austin’s Bipolar Disorders Center and the Director of Women’s Reproductive Mental Health of Texas. He specializes in providing psychiatric care during pregnancy and the postpartum period, including preconception planning for women with mental health conditions. Additionally, Dr. Newport is a professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Dell Medical School Department of Women’s Health at The University of Texas at Austin. He also serves as the Associate Chair for Research for the Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Newport earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and his master’s in clinical research from Emory University. He completed both a residency in general psychiatry and a research fellowship in biological psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Newport’s research focuses on women’s mental health with a particular emphasis on the psychobiology of psychiatric illness and substance use disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. His work also explores the pharmacokinetics of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and lactation as well as the long-term neuroendocrine and behavioral impact of traumatic experiences during childhood. He is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists, the American Medical Association, and the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. He has authored numerous publications in leading journals across numerous specialties, including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Bipolar Disorders, British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, JAMA, Neurology, Pediatrics, Psychological Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, and Neuropsychopharmacology.
