Biography and Education

Clinical Biography

Sullivan Ayuso, MD, is a general surgeon in UT Health Austin’s General Surgery Clinic. He specializes in hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, and minimally invasive surgery. Additionally, Dr. Ayuso is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Ayuso earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and sociology from Emory University and his medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed a residency in general surgery at Carolinas Medical Center, where he served as administrative chief resident, and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Endeavor Health.

Dr. Ayuso’s clinical interests include abdominal wall hernias, diaphragmatic hernias, obesity, and esophageal motility disorders. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in surgical education and outreach. He currently serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and as a committee member for the American Hernia Society and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is also an active member of the American Foregut Society, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the European Hernia Society.
