Biography and Education

Clinical Biography

Nicholas Ortiz, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist and the Clinical Director of Neuromodulation for UT Health Austin’s Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation service. He specializes in treatment-resistant depression. Additionally, Dr. Ortiz is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Ortiz earned his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern University and his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. He completed a residency in psychiatry at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.

Dr. Ortiz serves on the Medical Executive Council for Ascension Seton Shoal Creek and as the Clinical Director of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) for Ascension Seton Medical Center. His clinical interests include neurostimulation, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and inpatient psychiatry. He is involved in several ongoing research studies investigating the effect of neuromodulation therapies on psychiatric illness, including TMS for atypical depression, TMS following psilocybin for depression, vagal nerve stimulation for depression, and DBS for Alzheimer’s disease. His publications appear in the American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology and Current Psychiatry.
