Biography and Education

Clinical Biography

Jonathan Mason, DO, DABFM, CAQSM, is a board-certified sports medicine specialist in UT Health Austin’s Sports and Injury Clinic within the Musculoskeletal Institute. He specializes in caring for patients with sports-related and musculoskeletal injuries. Additionally, Dr. Mason is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care and a courtesy assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Population Health.

Dr. Mason earned his bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from The University of Texas at Austin and his medical degree from Midwestern University. He completed a residency in family medicine with a sports medicine distinction track at the Dell Medical School, where he was elected representative for the Resident House Officer Association for Graduate Medical Education and served as Chief Resident for the Family Medicine program. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Wake Forest University, where he also acted as a team physician for Wake Forest University Athletics.

Dr. Mason has provided medical coverage for numerous athletic events in Austin and Winston-Salem, including the Austin Marathon, Austin 3M Half Marathon, Big 12 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament, and Winston-Salem Cycling Classic. He also served as a team physician for several Austin-area teams, including Austin High School Maroons Varsity Football. His clinical interests include diagnostic ultrasound, concussion treatment, and ultrasound-guided procedures such as hydrodissections, barbotage for calcific tendinopathy, and other minimally invasive injections. He is particularly passionate about caring for runners and athletes with tendinopathy, an interest inspired by a medical mission trip to Iten, Kenya, where he worked with elite runners to treat their injuries. He is also deeply committed to education, especially in musculoskeletal ultrasound and its role in optimizing patient care.
