Clinical Biography
James Jackson Burns, LPC-S, is a licensed professional counselor in UT Health Austin’s Bipolar Disorder Center. He specializes in the assessment and treatment of mood disorders and trauma- and stressor-related disorders.
James Jackson Burns earned both his bachelor’s degree in psychology and Christian studies and his master’s degree in counseling from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He completed an internship in counseling at both Central Counties Services and Bluebonnet Trails Community Services.
James Jackson Burns’ research focuses on improving outcomes for adolescents and families affected by bipolar disorder. With experience across a range of settings—from community-based programs to inpatient care—he provides cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for psychiatric disorders and interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) for bipolar disorder to adolescents and adults. Through his work with the Families Learning About Recovery Strategies (FLARES) Project at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, he developed a clinical specialty in cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and is registered with the international CPT Provider Roster. He also created a telehealth adaptation of the Life Goals Program at the Bipolar Disorder Center.
