Clinical Biography
Hugo R. Martinez, MD, is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist in the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, a clinical partnership between Dell Children’s Medical Center and UT Health Austin, and serves as both the Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Program and the Medical Co-Director of the Heart Failure, VAD, and Transplant Program within the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease. He specializes in cardiovascular genetics. Additionally, Dr. Martinez is an associate professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. Martinez earned his medical degree from the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla in Puebla, Mexico. He completed a residency in pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical Branch, a fellowship in cardiology at Riley Children’s Hospital/Indiana University Health, and a fellowing in advance cardiac disease and transplant cardiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Dr. Martinez formerly held leadership positions at the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where he was instrumental in developing the mechanical circulatory support service line, the cardio-genetics clinic, and the cardio-oncology program. He also served as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center of Excellence (endorsed by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopth Association) and the Co-Medical Director of the Heart Failure and Transplant team. His clinical and research interests focus on cardio-oncology and cardiovascular genetics. He served as a clinical researcher for the cardio-genetics team at Texas Children’s Hospital and has been involved in numerous clinical studies and extramural support investigating novel modalities to counteract heart failure, exploring cardio-genomic profiles, and evaluating therapy-related cardiovascular dysfunction in children and young adults with cancer. He has also served as an editor for textbook on mechanical circulatory support and was elected Chair of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (Pediatric Group).
Dr. Martinez is a pediatric cardiologist with UT Health Austin.
