Clinical Biography

Moe “Harry” Hein Aung, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist in UT Health Austin’s Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of visual disorders caused by neurologic disease, which include optic nerve abnormalities (e.g., optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy), visual field deficits, pupillary asymmetry, double vision, and eye movement disorders. Additionally, Dr. Aung is an assistant professor and serves as the Assistant Director of Research for the Dell Medical School Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Aung earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Grinnell College and both his medical degree and his doctorate in neuroscience from the Emory School of Medicine through a dual degree program. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Emory University and both a residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Aung’s former research investigated the role of retinal dopamine in visual dysfunction in early-stage diabetic retinopathy. His current clinical and research interests include understanding the effects of other neuro-ophthalmic disorders on the retinal dopaminergic system.
