Biography and Education

Clinical Biography

Gene Kim, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist in UT Health Austin’s Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute. He specializes in corneal transplantation and anterior segment reconstructive surgery and has expertise in both cataract surgery and LASIK laser eye surgery. Additionally, Dr. Kim is an associate professor and serves as the Residency Program Director for the Dell Medical School Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Kim earned his bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego, and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at Emory University and a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the John A. Moran Eye Center/University of Utah.

Dr. Kim formerly served as both the Medical Student Assistant Director/Director and the Residency Program Director for the McGovern Medical School Department of Ophthalmology. His clinical interests include cornea and external disease, medical, and surgical management. His current research interests involve utilizing technology to improve the value and execution of medical care.
