Biography and Education
Clinical Biography
Elisa Furay, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon in the Texas Center for Esophageal and Foregut Surgery within UT Health Austin’s General and Gastrointestinal Surgery Clinic. She specializes in advanced minimally invasive, robotic, and endoscopic surgery for gallbladder disease, abdominal wall hernias, and both benign and malignant esophageal and gastric conditions. Additionally, Dr. Furay is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Furay earned her bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and her medical degree from University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. She completed a residency in general surgery at The University of Texas at Austin, where she served as the administrative chief resident during her final year, and a fellowship in advanced gastrointestinal (GI) and minimally invasive foregut surgery at the University of Southern California. Her fellowship training included advanced endoscopy and minimally invasive surgical techniques in general and foregut surgery, covering both benign and malignant esophageal and gastric disorders.
Dr. Furay’s clinical interests include foregut conditions, such as GERD, hernias, achalasia, gastroparesis, and esophageal or stomach cancers; abdominal wall surgery, including hernia repair and complex reconstruction; minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic, robotic, and advanced endoscopic procedures; and general surgery, including gallbladder and soft tissue conditions. Her research focuses on surgical outcomes and innovation in foregut and minimally invasive surgery. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on foregut surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and trauma care and has contributed chapters to leading surgical textbooks. She is dedicated to teaching surgery residents and mentoring medical students and is an active member of several national surgical organizations.
