Clinical Biography

Curry L. Koening, MD, MS, is a board-certified rheumatologist in both UT Health Austin’s Rheumatology Clinic and UT Health Austin’s Musculoskeletal Institute. He specializes in vasculitis and musculoskeletal disorders. Additionally, Dr. Koening is an associate professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Koening earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and his. medical degree from Texas A&M University College of Medicine. He earned his master’s degree in clinical research from Case Western Reserve University. He completed both an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in rheumatology at The University of Utah. He also completed additional training in vasculitis at Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Koening formerly served as the Director of the Vasculitis Clinic at both The University of Utah and the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His clinical interests include vasculitis and musculoskeletal disorders, and his research interests include clinical and translational research in vasculitis. He has participated in biomarker studies and clinical trials exploring the use of novel medications for the treatment of vasculitis. He provided rheumatology care as part of community work with the Navajo nation. He is an active member of the American College of Rheumatology, the Texas Medical Association, the Travis County Medical Society, and the Utah Medical Association. He is a former steering committee member of the Vasculitis Clinical Research Consortium.

Dr. Koening has participated in medical research for diseases such as giant cell arteritis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, microscopic polyangiitis, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, polyarteritis nodosa, Takayasu arteritis, and gout. These studies include biomarker investigation and utility of biologic medications for certain types of vasculitis.
