Biography and Education

Clinical Biography

Richard Freeman, MD, MHL, is a board-certified general surgeon in UT Health Austin’s Surgical Oncology Clinic. He specializes in complex hepatobiliary and general surgery, caring for patients with liver and biliary tumors and providing surgical care for patients with portal hypertension and liver failure. Additionally, Dr. Freeman is a professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care and a courtesy professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Information, Risk, and Operations Management. He also serves as the Senior Executive for Special Initiatives, Clinical Affairs for the Dell Medical School.

Dr. Freeman earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his master’s in healthcare leadership at Brown University. He completed a residency in general, pediatric, and vascular surgery at the Royal Aberdeen Infirmary in Aberdeen, Scotland. He also completed both a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in transplantation surgery at the Harvard Surgical Service at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Dr. Freeman formally led the transplantation programs at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and served as Chair of Surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is a former president of the International Liver Transplant Society, has served on the Board of Directors for several regional and national transplant organizations, and has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and abstracts.
