Biography and Education
Monica Navarro Jimenez, LMSW, is a licensed master social worker in the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, a clinical partnership between Dell Children’s Medical Center and UT Health Austin. She is also a part of UT Health Austin’s Integrated Behavioral Health care team. She specializes in providing support for patients with single ventricle heart defects that are a part of the IMPACT program, a home-monitoring program for high-risk infants who are between the stages of their single ventricle palliation, and ensures holistic and patient-centered services are delivered to patients with congenital heart disease and their families.
Monica Navarro Jimenez earned her master’s in social work from The University of Texas at Austin Steve Hicks School of Social Work, where she received a certificate in health care social work. She also earned her bachelor’s in public health with a concentration in social and behavioral sciences from The University of Texas at Austin. While pursuing her master’s through the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, she assisted in the development and evaluation of a pilot study examining the impact of sociocultural factors, particularly discrimination, on behaviors among Latinas at risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy and its role in psychological distress.
Monica Navarro Jimenez has experience working in medical, public health, and social research settings, which have granted her the opportunity to serve minority and low-income populations, including individuals with chronic illnesses and those who belong to the Latino population. Through her experiences, she has witnessed the challenges that arise for children and families battling illness, living with trauma, and navigating systems with language barriers. As a St. David’s Foundation Bilingual Social Work Scholar, she has also worked with individuals with chronic mental illness and those who suffered from substance use disorders and trauma. Over the years, her commitment to serving her community has become integrated with her passion for health equity and restorative justice. Her past research has broadened her knowledge of feminist theory, crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, and social determinants of health, and she recently served on a team funded by the National Science Foundation through Michigan State University that investigated debt as a control tactic in abusive marriages.
