Clinical Biography

Karl Koenig, MD, MS is the Medical Director for the Musculoskeletal Institute at UT Health Austin. He specializes in treatment of hip and knee arthritis including both primary and revision surgery. Dr. Koenig has a special interest in the treatment of periprosthetic fractures and joint infections.

Dr. Koenig has dedicated his career to improving health care systems and finding ways to provide everyone with affordable, quality care. It is an idea that was instilled in him from a young age. Growing up in Texas, his family was uninsured and when he was 10 years old, the future doctor found himself in need of a medical care. “I remember our family physician did a little procedure to cut out an ingrown toenail,” says Dr. Koenig. “We were in his office and he specifically knocked off his charge cause he knew I was a poor kid. That made an impression on me.”

After getting his undergraduate degree from MIT and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Koenig and his family moved to New Hampshire where he earned a Master of Science from Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, Dr. Koenig was one of the architects of GreenCare Pathways, a quality improvement initiative around total joint replacement, and lead the Division of Adult Reconstruction at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Despite his success at Dartmouth, Dr. Koenig saw a unique opportunity to join the staff at Dell Medical School, calling it “a once in a lifetime opportunity.” In 2016, Dr. Koenig and his family returned to Texas where he became the medical director of the Musculoskeletal Institute at UT Health Austin, and an assistant professor at Dell Med. Says Dr. Koenig, “I asked myself, ‘Where do I have the best chance to make health care better for my children?’ There is no question that place is here.”
